Last Night Ubuntu Saved My Life

My iBook has been on the fritz. If you know me at all, you know that my iBook is how I get things done. I do EVERYTHING on that thing. And on Linux. I use Firefox to browse the web (duh). I use Pidgin as my multiprotocol IM client. I use k9copy for dvd backup. I use k3b to burn anything. VLC for video. I'm torn between Rhythmbox and Amarok for my choice of audio player. Gimp and Inkscape for my graphics editing. Avidemux for my video editing. Open Office for, well, my office stuff. And I know I already told you about Frostwire. Don't be jealous of my Melissa Joan Hart desktop - I made that as a transfer print for an art show years ago.

I'm way cooler than I think.

Quit Using Limewire You Idiots

I mean that in the nicest way.
Instead, you should use Frostwire.
It's the open source version of Lime Wire Pro, it's free, it never whines about paying to "upgrade" and it's better than ever now.
Features include:

Completely Free & open-source

Firewall-to-firewall transfers

Turbo-Charged Download Speeds

Absolutely NO Spyware or Adware

Connects to more sources

Creative Commons license support

Max. speed network connections

Junk Result Filters

Community Chat Rooms

iTunes Integration

BitTorrent Support

Proxy Support

The .torrent support is a brilliant catch because I can use one app to handle all of my downloads. Combine that with it being cross-platform (that just means it runs on any computer) and you can't beat it. As Courtney and Nikki say: "Get it ahhh..."

Sorry to keep y'all waiting

What have I been up to?
  • Training - a LOT. Kali, Aikido, JiuJitsu, and I guess I'll resume kickboxing and CSW pretty soon. I wanna get ripped.

  • Maintaining my Ubuntu PC. I had great success installing WINE today. I'm trying to avoid my usual Ubuntu OCD which involves a complete wipe and reinstall from scratch.

  • Pondering. I'm sick of the irony, satire, and contradiction. I'm sick of the fragmentation. I like being single, but I still think about you-know-who everyday.

  • Learning. About .xls, .csv, groupware, etc.

  • I need some back up. And I want to back you up. Get at me.

    re-Feisty-ized

I spent all of yesterday hooking up a clean install of Ubuntu 7.04. I took the time to install every codec, including aac support for all of my iTunes-ripped cd's. I installed Amarok as the default music player, and used the cp -r command to copy over my directory of 95 gigs of music from my Lacie drive. Finally, I backed up some cd's and dvd's using k3b and k9copy. Yes Virginia-I'm leaving you for Ubuntu.

If I could, I'd install Ubuntu on my little brother

Okay, so I love my iBook. But I don't like the price of Apple hardware. In fact, I hate it. Don't even try me on Windows, which I avoid like the plague. At the end of the day, I like inexpensive hardware and open source software that gets the job done. Whenever one of my friends starts whining about their windows machine letting them down, I always say: "Delete windows, install Ubuntu, be happy." You can read about it all over the internet, and you can try Live Discs without installing anything. I found this on LifeHacker today. If you're not using Ubuntu and reading LifeHacker, you're not even trying to get things done (no pun intended).

    VLC

VLC is an amazing piece of software that will play just about any audio or video format I throw at it. I use it on both my iBook G4 and my Ubuntu box. I just gets better and better everytime. It's cross-platform, free, opensource, and it just works. Get it here now.
